S&P 500 Turnover: How Much the Index Has Changed Since 2010

What’s the question?

Survivorship bias — the tendency to study only the entities that survived a selection process, ignoring those that did not — is one of the most damaging errors in quantitative finance. If a backtest uses today’s S&P 500 constituents and applies them retroactively to 2010, it systematically excludes every company that was removed from the index during the intervening 16 years: the acquisitions, the bankruptcies, the demotions. The result is an inflated performance estimate because the backtest only examines winners. How much has the S&P 500 actually turned over since 2010, and what does that turnover rate imply for historical analysis?

The approach

Point-in-time constituent data records exactly which companies were in an index on any given historical date. This is distinct from the current constituent list, which only shows today’s members. By taking three snapshots of the S&P 500 — January 2010, January 2020, and May 2026 — we can directly measure how many companies have entered and exited the index over 16 years.

The turnover rate is computed by comparing the 2010 constituent set against the 2026 set. Any ticker present in 2010 but absent in 2026 counts as a departure. Any ticker present in 2026 but absent in 2010 counts as a new entrant. The ratio of departures to the original constituent count gives the turnover rate.

One methodological note: the constituent counts (425, 441, 439) differ from 500 because some S&P 500 companies have multiple share classes (e.g., GOOGL and GOOG), while the index committee counts the company once but the data may deduplicate by ticker.

What this tells us

Of the 425 tickers in the S&P 500 as of January 2010, 185 are no longer in the index as of May 2026 — a turnover rate of 43.9%. Only 236 tickers remain from the original set. The departures occurred through several distinct mechanisms: acquisition (Aetna was acquired by CVS Health), privatization (Dell went private in 2013), bankruptcy (companies removed during financial distress), and demotion (companies whose market capitalization fell below the index committee’s threshold).

The asymmetry between departures (185) and new entrants (200) reflects both organic growth of companies into index eligibility and structural changes such as spin-offs (AbbVie was spun off from Abbott Laboratories in 2013 and entered the index as a new constituent) and IPOs of large companies that quickly qualified (Airbnb).

The practical consequence is that nearly half of the 2010 index is not represented in a backtest that uses the current constituent list. The excluded companies disproportionately include underperformers — those removed for declining market capitalization — and acquired companies whose returns terminated at the acquisition price rather than continuing to compound.

So what?

Any backtest, factor study, or historical analysis that uses the current S&P 500 constituent list as a proxy for the historical membership is contaminated by survivorship bias. The 43.9% turnover rate over 16 years means that such an analysis ignores the experience of nearly half the companies that were actually in the index during the test period. Point-in-time constituent data eliminates this problem by providing the exact membership list as it existed on each historical date. When constructing a historical portfolio simulation, the constituent list should be refreshed at each rebalancing date using the membership that was known at that time, not the membership known today.
