How to Choose a Financial Data API

Choose on four things, in this order: what the licence permits you to build, whether the history stays fixed once you have read it, how the provider handles a company whose ticker changed, and only then coverage and price. Most buyers reverse that order, compare endpoint counts and monthly costs first, and discover the other three after they have written code against the wrong source. Coverage is easy to compare and rarely the thing that breaks a project. Licensing and identity are hard to compare and usually are.

What are you actually buying?

Three different products get sold under the label “financial data API”, and confusing them wastes weeks.

The first is a quote feed: last price, bid, ask, updated continuously. The second is a historical archive: daily bars, financial statements, index membership, going back years. The third is a computed layer: ratios, factor scores, screens, where somebody else has already decided what “free cash flow” means.

A backtest needs the second and possibly the third. A trading application needs the first. A dashboard showing yesterday’s close needs neither a real-time feed nor its price tag, which is the single most common overspend in this category. If you are unsure which side of that line you sit on, the real-time versus end-of-day question is worth settling before you compare vendors at all.

Can you legally use the data for what you are building?

Free and reachable are not the same as usable. A public endpoint that returns JSON in your browser may still carry terms prohibiting automated collection, commercial use, or redistribution, and those terms bind whatever you build on top.

This is the question to answer first, because it is the only one that can invalidate a finished product rather than merely inconvenience it. Scraped consumer-finance endpoints are the usual trap: they work, they are documented by third parties, and their terms frequently forbid exactly the commercial use the developer has in mind. We wrote up the Yahoo Finance case specifically because it comes up more than any other.

Ask any provider two questions in writing. May I redistribute derived values to my own customers, and may I store the raw data? A vendor that cannot answer plainly is telling you something.

Does the history change after you read it?

Financial history is not fixed. Companies restate earnings, indices add and drop members, and prices get adjusted for splits and dividends after the fact. A provider decides how to represent that, and the decision determines whether your backtest is honest.

Two specifics matter more than the rest:

xfinlink exposes historical index constituents through an as_of parameter, so xfl.index("sp500", as_of="2010-01-01") returns the membership on that date, and keeps raw and split-adjusted closes in separate columns rather than collapsing them.

What happens when a ticker changes hands?

Tickers are labels, not identities, and they get reused. Dell went private and came back under a different symbol. General Motors after 2009 is not the same legal entity as General Motors before it. Facebook became Meta and kept trading. A ticker string that means one company in 2012 can mean an unrelated one in 2020.

Any system keyed on ticker strings will silently splice those histories together. The result is a price series for a company that never existed, and nothing in the data announces the problem.

Ask how a provider models identity. If the answer is “by ticker”, the histories are spliced whether the vendor realises it or not. xfinlink assigns each company a stable entity identifier and resolves tickers to it, so xfl.resolve("GM") returns the pre-2009 General Motors Corporation and the current General Motors Company as separate entities with their own validity dates, and every endpoint accepts that identifier directly.

How much history do you actually need?

More than most people assume, and the reason is statistical rather than sentimental. A strategy tested only on data since 2010 has never seen a sustained bear market in bonds, a rate-hiking cycle from a normal starting level, or an equity decline that took more than eighteen months to recover. Two decades is a reasonable floor for anything making claims about risk.

Fundamentals need a different kind of depth: enough years for a company to have restated something, changed a fiscal year end, or been acquired. That is where extraction quality shows up, and it does not show up at all in a two-year sample.

What do the free tiers actually give you?

Free tiers differ enormously, and the differences are rarely in the marketing copy. Verified against each provider’s own documentation on 7 August 2026:

SEC EDGAR deserves more credit than it usually gets. It is the authoritative source, it is genuinely free, and its update latency is not the constraint people assume: the SEC documents “a typical processing delay of less than a second” for the submissions API and “under a minute” for the XBRL APIs. If your project needs a handful of filings for a handful of companies, use it directly and skip the vendor question entirely.

What EDGAR does not do is hand you a panel. Filings arrive per company, per form, tagged with concepts that differ between filers, and turning several thousand of them into one comparable table is the actual work. That assembly, plus the market data EDGAR does not carry, is what a commercial provider sells. Alpha Vantage’s free tier is workable for a script that runs a few times a day; 25 requests will not populate a screener across an index.

A short buying checklist

  1. Confirm in writing what the licence permits for your specific use, including redistribution.
  2. Pull one company that changed ticker and one that was acquired, and check the history is not spliced.
  3. Request an index roster as of a date five years ago and compare it against today’s.
  4. Pull the same series twice, a week apart, and diff them.

The fourth test is the one nobody runs, and it catches more problems than the other three combined.

Frequently asked questions

Is a paid API worth it over free sources?
It depends on volume and on whether you need a panel or a handful of records. For a few companies and occasional pulls, SEC EDGAR plus a free tier will do. Once you need a full index cross-section, point-in-time membership, or a licence that permits commercial use, the assembly work is the product you are buying.

How much history is enough for a backtest?
Two decades is a reasonable floor for any claim about risk or drawdowns, because shorter samples exclude entire market regimes. Strategy research on fundamentals needs enough years to include restatements and fiscal-year changes.

What is the most common mistake when choosing a provider?
Comparing endpoint counts and monthly prices while ignoring the licence and the identity model. Both are discovered late, and both are expensive to fix, because they invalidate work rather than slow it down.
